The Dinner Party

The Dinner Party

A group of country neighbors wanted to get together on a regular basis
and socialize. As a result, about 10 couples formed a dinner club and
agreed to meet for dinner at a different neighbors house each month.
Of course the lady of the house was to prepare the meal.

When it came time for Jimmy and Susie Brown to have the dinner at
their house, like most women, Susie wanted to outdo all the others and
prepare a meal that was the best that any of them had ever lapped a
lip over.

A few days before the big event, Susie got out her cookbook and
decided to have mushroom smothered steak. When she went to the store
to buy some mushrooms, she found the price for a small can was more
than she wanted to pay.

She then told her husband, "We aren't going to have mushrooms because
they are too expensive.

He said, "Why don't you go down in the pasture and pick some of those
mushrooms? There are plenty of them right in the creek bed."

She said," No, I don't want to do that, because I have heard that wild
mushrooms are poisonous."

He then said, "I don't think so. I see the varmints eating them all
the time and it never has affected them."

After thinking about this, Susie decided to give this a try and got in
the pickup and went down in the pasture and picked some. She brought
the wild mushrooms back home and washed them, sliced and diced them to
get them ready go over her smothered steak. Then she went out on the
back porch and got Ole Spot's (the yard dog) bowl and gave him a
double handful. She even put some bacon grease on them to make them
tasty.

Ole' Spot didn't slow down until he had eaten every bite. All morning
long Susie watched him and the wild mushrooms didn't seem to affect
him, so she decided to use them.

The meal was a great success, and Susie even hired a lady from town To
come out and help her serve. She had on a white apron and a little cap
on her head. It was first class. After everyone had finished they all
began to kick back and relax and socialize. The men were visiting and
the women started to gossip a bit.

About this time the lady from town came in from the kitchen and
whispered in Susie's ear. She said, "Mrs. Brown, Spot just died." With
this news, Susie went into hysterics. After she finally calmed down,
she called the doctor and told him what had happened.

The doctor said, "It's bad, but I think we can take care of it. I will
call for an ambulance and I will be there as quick as I can get there.
We will pump out everyone's stomach and everything will be fine. Just
keep them all there and keep them calm."

It wasn't long until they could hear the wail of the siren as the
ambulance was coming down the road. When they got there, the EMTs got
out with their suitcases and a stomach pump and the doctor arrived
shortly thereafter..

One by one they took each person into the master bedroom and pumped
out their stomach.

After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, I think
everything will be fine now, and he left.

They were all looking pretty peaked sitting around the living room,
and about this time the town lady came in and said, "You know, that
truck driver that ran over Ole Spot never even stopped.

How to Keep Teeth Naturally White

There are many effective methods of teeth whitening available, but some come with heavy price tags. Here are some steps you can take at home to whiten teeth naturally without breaking the bank.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Straw
  • Toothbrush
  • Lemon Juice
  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Strawberries

Step 1:
Limit your consumption of drinks that stain tooth enamel. A few of these include coffee, tea and red wine. If you simply can't cut back on these beverages, consider drinking them though a straw to limit the amount of liquid that actually comes in contact with teeth.

Step 2:
Brush your teeth immediately after eating, especially if eating foods that stain easily, such as berries.

Step 3:
Rub raw strawberries on your teeth, preferably pureed. There is an enzyme in strawberries that acts as a whitening agent. You'll want to brush and rinse after applying the strawberries to remove the natural sugars and acids they may leave behind.

Step 4:
Eat crunchy foods that require a lot of chewing such as carrots, celery, broccoli and apples. These foods are abrasive and will remove built up plaque, which dulls the appearance of teeth.

Step 5:
Dip your toothbrush directly into baking soda and brush. The results are worth the lousy taste.

Step 6:
Combine lemon juice and one teaspoon of salt to make a paste-like substance. Brush your teeth and rinse. Again, not so pleasant on the palate, but your teeth will thank you.

Step 7:
Use hydrogen peroxide to brush your teeth. Dip your toothbrush into a small capful of the peroxide and brush as you would with regular toothpaste, being careful not to swallow. Rinse with water.

- Tips -

  • Consider using one of the several whitening toothpastes on the market that have all-natural ingredients.
  • Brushing after every meal and flossing regularly are the first steps in maintaining a healthy smile.

Work Is Worship

The Greatest Devotee
Lord Vishnu (Narayan) has a great devotee named Narad. Vishnu also loved him. Once it so happened that pride entered his mind and he thought that he was the greatest devotee of God. In order to confirm this he asked Vishnu, “ O God! I have a great curiosity in my mind so as to know who is your greatest devotee in the whole creation?”
Vishnu knew the whole truth. In order to teach him a lesson and to remove pride from Narad’s mind he said, “ Well, if you really want to see my greatest devotee, we will have
to go to earth. Narad agreed to this and both went to the earth in disguise. Dressed as ordinary men, the knocked the door of a poor farmer at night. The farmer was getting ready to take dinner when he heard the knock. He opened the door and finding two strangers standing out side he asked them what brought them to his house. The two
strangers told the former that they were travelers and having lost their way they wanted shelter. They were quite tired and hungry too. The farmer greeted them into his house.
He informed his wife about the arrival of two guests and asked her to serve them food.
He thought himself lucky that he had not finished his dinner. He gave them water to wash
their faces, hands and feet. Then the food was served. Vishnu liked the food, though it was not very tasty and good.
Then they were given the bed, which the farmer used for himself. With the permission of the guests he went to take dinner. While taking dinner the husband and wife talked about the arrival of these guests. They thanked God that the guests had not to sleep empty stomach. Then they satisfied their hunger with whatever was left, took water and slept on straw bed and went to sleep on straw bed. Both the guests overheard all this.
Next morning the farmer got busy in his routine not forgetting to take proper care of them. During the days work the former hardly took the name of God once or twice.
In the evening Vishnu left the place with Narad.
On their way back Narad asked Vishnu, “ So is this your greatest devotee?”
“ Yes,” said Vishnu. Narad was not convinced at all. He said, “ I utter your name more than a million time in a day whereas the farmer hardly remembered you twice or thrice
during the whole day. How can he be your greatest devotee?
Vishnu smiled and said, “ I will prove it to you, if you want.” Narad agreed.
Vishnu snatched all the divine powers from Narad and made him an ordinary human
being. He gave him an earthen pitcher full of oil and asked Narad to put it on his head.
Then Vishnu said to Narad, “ Now walk up to the tree, about a hundred meters away from there, touch the tree and come back. Rememker, not even a single drop of oil should fall out and you should not touch the pitcher by your hand.”
Narad said, “Ok and proceeded.” On his way he found it very difficult to complete the task fulfilling the two given conditions of not allowing a single drop to fall out and not to touch the pitcher by his hand.
Hardly could he complete the job. When he came back Vishnu asked him, “How many times did you remember me during your march?” Narad answered, “ How could I think of? All the time I just cared about the oil.”
Now Vishnu explained him that how could he become the greatest devotee simply by uttering the name ‘ Narayan,Narayan’ having all divine powers and no worries. Whereas the farmer had to struggle for his lively hood, having lots of worries he greeted the guests, offered his own share and felt himself lucky and thankful to God. At least he remembered me in times of distress in a happy mood and thankful mind. In this way the
pride of Narad was removed and the importance of work established. It has been rightly
said, “ Work is worship.”16 November 2008

Main articles: History of Independent India, Political Integration of India, and Partition of India

Jawaharlal Nehru being sworn in as India's first Prime Minister by Lord Mountbatten on August 15, 1947
Jawaharlal Nehru's tryst with destiny speechOn 3 June 1947, Viscount Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last British Governor-General of India, announced the partitioning of the British Indian Empire into India and Pakistan, under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947. At the stroke of midnight, on 15 August 1947, India became an independent nation. This was preceded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's famous speech titled Tryst with destiny.

“ At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance..... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again. ”

Prime Minister Nehru and Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel invited Lord Mountbatten to continue as Governor General of India. He was replaced in June 1948 by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari. Patel took on the responsibility of unifying 565 princely states, steering efforts by his “iron fist in a velvet glove” policies, exemplified by the use of military force to integrate Junagadh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Hyderabad state into India. J&K became a part of India when Pakistan laid siege and the then king Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession with India to save J&K from Pakistan. India responded on behalf of J&K by sending in its armed forces to counteract the Pakistani attack. Later PM Nehru went to UN and a cease fire was declared. Pakistan has not withdrawn its military forces from the occupied Kashmir, and the territory termed as POK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir) has ever since been a cause of contention between India and Pakistan.

The Constituent Assembly completed the work of drafting the constitution on 26 November 1949; on 26 January 1950 the Republic of India was officially proclaimed. The Constituent Assembly elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as the first President of India, taking over from Governor General Rajgopalachari. Subsequently, a free and sovereign India absorbed two other territories: Goa (liberated from Portuguese control in 1961) and Pondicherry (which the French ceded in 1954). In 1952, India held its first general elections, with a voter turnout exceeding 62%; in practice, this made India the world's largest democratic country in the history of the modern and ancient world.
